LAURA MARLING'S NEW ALBUM RELEASE: SHORT MOVIE

The seemingly unstoppable Laura Marling released her fifth album earlier this week, and it may just be her most compelling album to date. Though the British songstress has definitely never lacked maturity, releasing her brilliant debut album at the ripe age of 17, Short Movie certainly illustrates significant growth as an artist and individual.

After extensively touring her last album, Once I Was An Eagle, Marling took some time off and moved to Los Angeles to focus on her writing. This change in setting and approach is echoed in Short Movie, which is a clear departure from the epically heart-breaking and powerful Eagle. Short Movie is noticeably smaller, lighter, and quirkier than its predecessor. Marling’s brilliant guitar playing is highlighted in tracks like “I Feel Your Love” and “Easy”, and occasionally infused with a twinge of rock, such as in the fiery debut single “False Hope” (which arguably the most electrically-charged track we have seen since A Creature I Don’t Know’s “The Beast” in 2011). Equally accessible and incomprehensible, eccentric and cohesive, subdued and commanding — Short Movie is audibly different from any of Marling’s past releases, and yet it undoubtedly stays true to who she is as an artist.

Other album highlights: “Walk Alone”, “Warrior”

Short Movie is available to stream in full on Spotify. Laura Marling will be returning to Toronto for the first time since 2013 (and for the first time with her full band since 2012) on July 28th at The Opera House.
