PULLING THE PLUG ON AMERICAN IDOL
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
Fox just announced that American Idol’s upcoming 15th season, airing in January 2016, will be its last.
Once the highest rated show on television, Idol has seen ratings slowly drop since hitting the small screen in 2002.
Stiff competition from similar talent shows like ‘The Voice’ and ‘The X-Factor’ may have contributed to lower ratings, but it’s also entirely possible that the show finally lost its muster.
Things were never really the same after the departures of original judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. They had a particular chemistry about them that made the show so watchable.
American Idol had been a launching pad for stars like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks, but since Sparks’ 2007 win, Idol winners have seen very little of the limelight.
Rumours are already circulating that the final season will include some sort of new angle and possibly incorporate elements of previous seasons. A vague description, but it looks like producers are looking to create attention and spike viewership before their curtain call.
