ROCK & ROLL'S ROYAL BLOOD
In their rapid rise to popularity, Royal Blood have gone from buzz worthy newcomers to one of the UK’s biggest new rock bands. The Brighton duo — consisting of singer/bassist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher — have only been a band since 2013, but they have swiftly become the most buzzed-about emergent UK rock band since the Arctic Monkeys exploded into the scene back in 2006. Perhaps not all coincidentally, Arctic Monkeys played a key role in Royal Blood’s quick rise to fame: AM drummer Matt Helders famously endorsed the then-unknown band by wearing a Royal Blood t-shirt to the Monkey’s 2013 headline Glastonbury set.
Royal Blood’s self-titled album, which dropped in August 2014, debuted at No. 1 in the UK and Ireland, and was nominated for the much-coveted Mercury Prize shortly thereafter. More recently, the band won Best British Group at the February 2015 Brit Awards, an award presented to them by Led Zeppelin guitarist - Jimmy Page. Page attended a Royal Blood gig in New York in late 2014, and had this to say about the duo: “They were fantastic. Absolutely riveting, they're such fine musicians. Their album has taken the genre up a serious few notches. It's so refreshing to hear, because they play with the spirit of the things that have preceded them, but you can hear they're going to take rock into a new realm – if they're not already doing that. It's music of tremendous quality.”
The band is touring non-stop well into 2015, playing a slew of music festivals and their own headline gigs in addition to multiple dates opening for the Foo Fighters in stadiums across North America and the UK. They are arguably one of the best rock duo’s since The White Stripes, and they aren’t slowing down anytime soon. Check out the video for their smash single “Figure It Out” below:
