NOTABLE COVERS FROM TORO Y MOI & JANELLE MONÁE

Performing a well-done cover, just like a producing a well-done movie remake, is a difficult task. Whether the track is a little too different than the original or simply offers no new take on the classic, the actual cover often pales in comparison. But, there are instances in which artists offer an interesting and masterfully-crafted spin on a classic. Taking a great song and aligning it with their own sound? Check. Managing to do so without offending (and absolutely butchering) the original song? Double check. Here are two covers we think should be applauded for their creativity:

Rocket Man (Elton John cover) — Astronauts ETC. ft. Toro Y Moi

Toro y Moi and his keyboardist Anthony Ferraro (AKA Astronauts Etc) have teamed up together for a new take Elton John's classic track "Rocket Man." The track is stripped down and candid, featuring Toro Y Moi’s smooth vocals over a minimalist electro backdrop. The pair do an unreal job, which you can listen to below:

No Surprises (Radiohead cover) — Roman GianArthur ft. Janelle Monáe

Roman GianArthur is a member of Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland Arts Society, and his latest release is ‘OK Lady’, an EP of Radiohead covers mashed up with D’Angelo covers and reimagined and repackaged as R&B. Radiohead tracks like “All I Need,” “Paranoid Android,” “High & Dry,” and “Nude” get the GianArthur makeover, plus Monáe stops by and lends her vocals on “No Surprises.” Check it out below:
