G-EAZY AND LOGIC - ENDLESS SUMMER TOUR
On Sunday July 24, I caught some quality hip-hop at the Molson Amphitheatre; my first time at this unique venue stationed beside Ontario Place south of the city.
Based on a poll on the Facebook event page YG was a major reason for a lot of people’s attendance, which shocks me because I find no appeal in his music. I just know “Who Do You Love” because of Drake’s feature. His brazy Compton vibe doesn’t do much for me although he dropped a tribute to Kendrick with a little rendition of "Maad City".
He came out chanting his notable lyrics “my nigga, my nigga” in front of Massive red letters read “BRAZY” behind him to promote the album "Still Brazy". He also performed singles "Still Brazy," "Why You Always Hating (ft. Drake and Kamaiyah)" and "Who Shot Me," off the latest album. Most of his other tracks were snippets to make the most of his 30 minute set.
Young Sinatra (Logic) dropped many gems off his latest work; Bobby Tarantino. "Flexicution" was the crowd favourite with its wild energy and almost too repetitive chorus. Let me use this moment to note how oddly similar "Slave II" is to "Rambo" by Bryson tiller by the way, comparison below: (Seriously, does anyone have an answer for this?)
Been a fan of logic since his track “All I do” dropped though and it was great to see the kid perform finally. Many of his nasa-style jackets were spotted within the crowd. The amount of merch being rocked at this massive venue was also the most I’ve ever seen.
The highlight of Logics set for me was the near the end with some touching fan engagement. Logic noticed a young lad in the front row was rapping word for word and had to give him the spotlight. The kid was featured on the jumbotron as logic repeated a couple bars with him acapella after directing “lets go, one breath!”. Pretty sure dude was crying after! Much love to Logic for being that real with his fans, it was great to see that.
About 15 minutes later, Young Gerald blessed the stage with “Random” as I proceeded to run up and down the aisle turning up and yelling lyrics.
Starting in his classic leather jacket look and shades he gradually stripped down into a tank and suspenders – the standard retro G-Eazy image. He dropped one of his newer tracks “In the meantime” ft. Quavo accompanied by humourous body language.
YG hopped back on stage to perform “Fuck Donald Trump” and G-Eazy spat his verse from the remix. It was fun to sing along to this one with all the other middle fingers in the air, made the whole amphitheatre proud to be Canadian.
Some tracks he performed that stood out to me as favourites were "Far Alone," "Drifting" and "Order More." "Some kind of drug" also had the ladies screaming, another good track with Marc E Bassy as featured on “When Its Dark Out”
In 2014 I saw G perform in Amsterdam to a room of 30 people. Although that intimate setting made for a great personal show, the sight of thousands of hands up for the man gave me a rush. I’ve watched this artist progress ever since he dropped "Lady Killers" with hoodie allen back in 2012 and its great to see his deserved fame come to fruition at last.
