CMW: INDIES W/ INDIE88 FT. HOLLERADO, REPARTEE, THE WOODEN SKY AND MORE
Seeing the Indie Awards is a great way to check out some killer new indie acts while celebrating the start of Canadian Music Week festival. This year, the festival was headlined by Hollerado and Dan Mangan, two of the best indie acts that Canada has to offer. A collection of other bands also received the opportunity to perform, including the Jim Beam Make History Talent Search winners, The Nursery, a talented group of young up-and-comers. Out of the entire festival lineup, three bands stood out the most. Repartee, an indie pop band signed by Sleepless Records, rocked the show! Their music has an electronic feel that got the whole crowd dancing right away. The songs they played were mad catchy, featuring drums and beats that gave me goosebumps. Haven’t heard of them before? Keep an ear out because their songs have been popping up on Toronto indie stations more and more frequently. They’ll definitely dance their way onto your next party playlist.
The Wooden Sky, or shall I say the next Sheepdogs, also impressed. I was beyond blown away by this band’s performance; it may have been the best of the night. I had never heard of them before the Indie Awards and oh man have I been missing out! The band just released their 5th LP, which can be streamed live from the CBC music page. Their performance was beautiful; it featured original sounding vocals and a fascinating use of different instruments. As their set continued, the songs kept getting better and better. They all had a hypnotic feel that had me swaying in time with the beat. Check this band out because they’re about to blow up.
Hollerado, a group from Ottawa who’ve been together since 2007, also stood out. Nominated for the Best New Group Award at the 2011 Juno awards, this group has been killing it at similar shows for years. They were also headlining, so you knew they were going to put on a great show. Their stage-presence was amazing; the performance was extremely interactive and engaging. Regarding the music, the beats were phenomenal and the vocals were on point. The whole crowd couldn’t stop jumping around and singing along to every song. I’ve been a fan for years and they’ve never sounded better. Check out their latest album and fall in love!
Thanks a ton to the Indie Awards for having me! I can’t wait to jam out again next year!
