MILEY'S GOT A NEW SOUND, WATCH THE VIDEO FOR "MALIBU"

Miley Cyrus just dropped her new song, "Malibu," with accompanying visuals, and, I have to say, this is the most excited I've been for anything Miley related since... well... ever.

Having taken a bit of a break since Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, this release marks the beginning of a new era. Taking a page out of Gaga's PR book, the messaging around this musical initiative appears to be one of "normalcy," sobriety and a rekindling of love -- for herself and ex fiancée (slash current fiancée), Liam Hemsworth.

The visuals are perfectly matched to the song, which is outside of the current scope of popular music, meaning this isn't the dance or hip hop track I expected. Sure, Miley has always marched to the beat of her own, or her management's drum, but this is unique even for her. The simplistic, scale-wise melody is sung over an anthemic drum + clapping section that, without a boat load of electronic noise, allow the lyrics to shine.

I greatly appreciate the sense of authenticity in this particular piece; there's no reaching for notes she can't hit , affected vocal techniques to, ahem, culture herself and even the video's makeup and styling seem to reflect a more vulnerable presence.

Maybe, for once, she's actually just "doing Miley." I'm already itching to hear single number two.
