CHILDISH GAMBINO'S BITTERSWEET "SUMMER PACK" EP
Bino is back. Since his chart topping recent single "This is America" and its controversial video, Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover gives fans a 2-track EP named Summer Pack. We hear production from himself and long-time collaborator Ludwig Göransson that perfectly paints a peaceful summer atmosphere, but of course Gambino went deeper than what appears on the surface.
"Summertime Magic" was released on July 11, exactly in the middle of summer. Yup sounds like something he would do. This is the lighter song lyrically as it's all about love and enjoying summer. The hook is simply "Do love me, do love me do" over and over. Both two tracks are similar instrumentally but the second one goes a bit more in depth.
FEELS LIKE SUMMER
The track floats with steel pan drums and minimal sound effects to place more focus on Gambino's vocal melodies. He's praising his lover for her summertime magic that makes him feel right. On the second verse he gets realer by touching an environmental concerns which seem to somehow have a perfect juxtaposition in a feel good song like this. As people are comfortable listening to this type of music they are still reminded of worldly issues. He sings;
"Every day gets hotter than the one before
Running out of water, it’s about to go down
Air that killed the bees that we depend upon
Birds were made for singing, waking up to no sound"
Hopefully listeners don't let these lines soar by them with the wave of peaceful instrumentation and take note. Donald still remains optimistic however and sings;
"I’m hopin' that this world would change
But it just seems the same"
We hope so too Donny. We also hope this version of politically aware Donald hangs around to educate the kids and push change.
