CHRIS LAROCCA CAN'T BE STOPPED, LISTEN TO "SALT" AND "HEATED UP"
This rising Toronto R&B star has been on my radar even since I saw him at Field Trip. "Heated Up" has serious Frank Ocean resemblance from the quirky filtered adlibs/vocal injections and bouncy, unique production. Comparable to "Dice Out", Chris enjoys the voice transposing for a variety of tones both organically and via mixing.
This summer playlist-perfect single is from Chris' just announced sophomore EP Saudade, out July 17 on Little Italy / Believe. A self-taught musician with soaring natural falsetto and punk rock past, Chris previously put out an EP and singles including "Closer" championed by Zane Lowe, etc all the while working 12-hour days at three jobs - tutoring, serving at an old age home and as in-home support for an elderly woman - to fund the project.
His new EP Saudade is an untranslatable word that exists only in the Portuguese language, describing a melancholic nostalgia/longing for a moment that never actually occurred.
Even more recently, Chris also dropped "Salt". This ones more minimal in terms of production and still provides the same harmonies and gentle crooning from Larocca. The songwriting is unmatchable and yet comparable to Daniel Caesar to the point I can see a collaboration in 2020.
Listen to both below and stay tuned for Saudade on July 17th.
