R&B artist Tinashe, who’s currently touring North America with Nicki Minaj, made a name for herself last year with the Top 40 summer anthem, “2 On”. The track was the first single off of her debut album, and though the artist is already hard at work on the follow-up to last year’s ‘Aquarius’ — she’s not done with it just yet. Even after dropping a new mixtape back in October 2014, the “2 On” singer premiered the official music video another ‘Aquarius’ track, “Cold Sweat”, on Tuesday.
The trippy video for this icy, understated track hints at a stylistic change for the 22-year-old L.A. native. She ditches the dance moves and in favor of a more eccentric, FKA Twigs-esque psychedelic vibe for this slow-burning track. The video features a warped Tinashe, who oozes between different faces and distortions.
It’s darker and far more abstract that anything she has released before, and stands in stark contrast to her style in “2 On”, as well as her recent collaborations with Charlie XCX, Ty Dolla $ign, and Iggy Azalea. Whether Tinashe is embracing a new artistic direction or she's simply establishing herself as a stylistic jack of all trades — it’s clear that she’s maturing as a musician and performer. The video, though technically off her debut album, acts as a promising cut of what can be expected on her upcoming sophomore release.
