It's easy to see why Montreal electro-pop duo Milk & Bone, composed of Laurence Lafond-Beaulne and Camille Poliquin, is capturing the attention of music fans far beyond their native Québec. Their slow-burning breakout single "New York” (which you can listen to below) garnered praise from blogs and critics across the globe, and for good reason.

Their spellbinding sound is essentially just pianos, vocal harmonies, and hints of subtle synth and drums that come together to form an eerily-enchanting and lush lo-fi pop infused with the bare bones of electronic music. They have managed to find a perfect balance between acoustic simplicity and shimmering electronica, one that strategically utilizes electric elements without being overwhelmed by the noise of EDM. Making the case for Montreal as one of the go-to cities for new music, the duo clearly shares certain elements — such as the electronic keyboards and ambient feel — with another up-and-coming Montreal buzz band, Seoul.

Lyrically, they are nothing if not heartbreakingly honest. “We tend to write songs that are true and raw,” Lafond-Beaulne said in a recent interview. “I think that people like that. I think that people want to hear the truth, even when the truth is not that pretty.” It’s delicate and candid minimalist electro-pop — and their ‘less-is-more’ sound is all the more compelling for it.

Milk & Bone dropped their debut album, ‘Little Mourning,’ back in March, and the release has set the tone for a promising year ahead. The album has already earned them a spot on Polaris Music Prize shortlist, alongside artists like Bahamas, The Barr Brothers, Arkells, and Death From Above 1979.
