The career of the jazz-trained, hip-hop-influenced Toronto trio BADBADNOTGOOD has been on a steady increase since the release of their masterful third studio album, ‘III’, released in 2014. Their most recent effort, ‘Sour Soul’, is just another example of the rate at which their career is progressing. The 12-track LP is a full-length collaboration with Wu Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah. The album collaboration was also interesting because the MC and the band were technically never in the same room during recording and didn't even meet until after the album came out. After three years of working long distance, they released ‘Sour Soul’ in February.

The album has earned the band a spot on the Polaris Music Prize shortlist this year, as well as earned them slots playing to increasingly larger crowds. The band returned to play some Canadian dates this past summer, including stops at Hillside Festival in Guelph and Pemberton Music Festival in BC. Next on the bill for the Toronto band is a series of appearances at fall festivals across the U.S. that stretch well into November.

It's not that often that I find acoustic songs completely fulfilling. Prom Queen Crown by Rallie and Coal however has all the needed elements. Captivating chord progressions, beautiful vocals and subtle progression to provide expanding elements.

Brooklyn Semhar waxes melancholic and laments a family divided on “Daddy.” This track is a smouldering, slow-burning groove that pulls itself along with all the moodiness of its subject matter. It is arranged beautifully, and reflects a refreshing jazz influence in its...
