This past week electro-pop duo Phantogram released their first single “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore”, off of their upcoming album Three. The band, who have set out to break the mould of popular music, succeed once again with a track that is both innovative and catchy.

Singer Sarah Barthel and guitarist/producer Josh Carter note that a big part of the band's success is based on their shared vision for the project. Coming from a small town upstate New York, the two started to make music together long into their already existing friendship. While Josh was focused on creating his own sound, in what would eventually become the electro-pop/indie rock fusion that is Phantogram, he started working with Sarah who added a new dimension. As a singer and keyboardist, the two would collaborate in songwriting from there on. Bored of the conventional genres that made up most of the scene in New York City at the time, they focused on creating music that derived from their own influences. Such would include James Brown, The Beatles, Cocteau Twins, and many more diverse artists.

After releasing two full length LP’s, the duo curated some success with songs like “When I’m Small” off of their debut Eyelid Movies...

"Blackout Days"...

and the hit “Fall in Love”, off of 2014’s LP Voices.

Since then, the group has made great triumph in the pop world. While they have captivated multiple sounds of electronic synth-pop, old-school hip/hop and new age indie rock in their own work, they have recently collaborated with an array of other musicians. This past year, they teamed up with Outkast’s Big Boi to create Big Grams, a project that incorporated a sort of synth-rap/hip-hop fusion. They also appeared on A-Trak’s single “Parallel Lines”, crossing once again into the world of electronic dance music.

“You Don’t Get Me High Anymore”, shows off the duo’s edgier side, relying heavily on a strong rhythm section, chunky guitar lick and vicious lyrics of a faded love story. Barthel shows us not only that she can sing, but that she represents Phantogram as a fierce front woman.

Three will be released on September 16, 2016. You can pre-order the album here.
