On September 7th, 1996 the famous California based rapper, 2Pac, was shot while riding in a car in Las Vegas. Six days later, Shakur passed away in a Las Vegas hospital at the age of only 25 years old. As today marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of one of rap’s greatest artists, it is a day to honour the life and career of the often times controversial yet widely praised rap legend.
2Pac, born Tupac Shakur, is one of hip hop music’s most famous names throughout history. While he was widely celebrated for his outstanding musical and acting talent he often received criticism throughout his career for his explicit, violent, and contentious lyrics. Shakur used his platform to highlight the current sociological issues faced by black youth living in the United States. His work makes reference to the world of racism, poverty, sex, police brutality, and gangs, which were all realities of his own life. Throughout the duration of his career, Shakur was actively involved in a feud between East Coast and West Coast rappers. This feud is believed to be the stemming cause of the shooting that occurred on September 7th, 1996, ultimately leading to his death six days later. The story of his short life and the fact that his killer has never been caught, all add to the enigmatic tragedy that is 2Pac.
