You might recognize Daya from her feature on the huge hit from The Chainsmokers’ titled, “Don’t Let Me Down” released earlier in the year. However, the extremely talented 17-year old singer and songwriter from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is not only a side act. In the last year, Daya has released her second single from her first full-length studio album, “Sit Still, Look Pretty”. The song just so happens to have the same name as the album itself, which is a bold move for an artist to make. For a song to bear the same name as the album, it will likely receive attention as being a succinct summary of the album’s message as a whole.

“Oh I don’t know what you’ve been told

But this gal right here’s gonna rule the world”

Sings Daya in her single “Sit Still, Look Pretty”, and that is exactly what she is doing.

Born, Grace Tandon, Daya found inspiration for her stage name from her Indian American heritage, as it translates from Hindi to the word for “grace”. (1) Although she is still young, Daya has had a long history making music. She learned to play the piano at the age of 3, eventually transitioning into playing the jazz piano when she was 11. She also plays the guitar, the ukulele, the saxophone, and the flute, along with singing. (2)

Gino Barlett, the platinum songwriter and producer, discovered Daya in early 2015. (3) Together the duo produced Daya’s first single titled “Hide Away”.

On September 4th, 2015, Daya released her self-titled EP, which included the single “Hide Away”, and five other tracks. The single officially went platinum in January 2016. Her debut studio album, “Sit Still, Look Pretty” came out on October 7th. (4)

The song “Sit Still, Look Pretty” is an anthem for girl power! It is incredibly catchy with lyrics that will easily get stuck in your head and a drumbeat that will likely brighten your day. As it blares out of your speakers you won’t be able to deny Daya’s talent. Her voice is unique, and memorable. She is definitely a powerful and skilled young artist to keep your eye on for the future.

Daya is currently touring internationally, with most of her stops being around the United States. She is also playing one show in Vancouver, Canada on March 17th at RIO Theater, and another show in Dubai. (5)
