Based out of Toronto, Kristen Violet May is a dynamic singer/songwriter. She has won a FACTOR demo grant, a Bourse St-Ambroise for rising musicians and was featured as a "Rising Star" by Galaxie Music.
I had the pleasure of attending her single release concert November 11th at The Drake Underground, and was blown away by her vocal performance.
"Lost In My Bed", Kristen’s newly released single, is filled with powerful vocals and a captivating beat. Much like her other songs, "Lost In My Bed", is very Amy Winehouse-esque, and filled with emotion and intensity.
I got to chat with Kristen about what inspired the lyrics and sound of her new single.
“With 'Lost In My Bed', I was influenced by my love of Soul/Motown as well as Rock music, so my producer and I wanted a sound that walked the line between those genres. Artists like Amy Winehouse and Rival Sons were a big influence. I had spent some time this past summer on tour with rock band The Commoners, who introduced me to Rival Sons and I liked the way my voice sounded against the heaviness of the music. When I began writing Lost In My Bed in my apartment, I was thinking about an ex-lover who was very hard to resist but was ultimately bad for me, so I knew I wanted the song to have some grit and toughness but also be seductive at the same time.”
There's nothing I love more than local Toronto music, so be sure to download Kristen's new single, here.
