Bad Pop, the indie-rock-punk band from Vancouver, Canada, has released a music video founded on feelings of nostalgia for its single “Bad Pop”. The music video resembles a round being played in an 8-bit video game. Player 1 in the game is Bad Pop frontman, Chris Connelly and the setting of the game is a dramatic day spent in the music industry.
Musically, the song “Bad Pop” is full of punchy drums, and upbeat and memorable riffs. In an interview with Clash, Connelly explained the meaning behind the song; “It’s a snarky reflection on the music business in both its cheeky lyrical style and simplistically catchy guitar riffs. It shines a cynical light on industry conventions, never straying from the darkly comedic tone that’s at the heart of what we do. It’s a parody of a pop song that also succeeds at being a pop song, and that’s a hell of a lotta pop.”
The band, which once went by the name of Hot Panda, is comprised of Chris Connelly who contributes the main vocals and who plays guitar, Catherine Hiltz on bass, vocals and trumpet, and Aaron Klassen playing the drums and also adding vocals. After time spent touring all over Canada, Bad Pop journeyed to the UK where they recently signed a deal with Metropolis Recordings. Now, they are back on the road with a 22-show tour sprawling throughout North America under their new band name, Bad Pop.
Catch them at Smiling Buddha in Toronto on March 7th.
