Venice beach based duo EXES has returned with a new single called “Cain.” They released their debut EP “The Art of Saying Goodbye” to critical acclaim in 2016. EXES is comprised of singer Allie McDonald and producer Mike Derenzo. They describe themselves an electro-dream-pop duo. Their specific goal is to write songs about their exes.
This particular song holds a lot of meaning for singer Allie McDonald. She wrote this song about someone she knew named Cain.
“Cain might be the most difficult and personal song we've ever written. Cain was my muse--my inspiration--my first love.
Although we were thousand of miles apart, we somehow found each other years ago. Our virtual relationship was composed purely of poems, songs, words, emails. I was never able to touch or meet Cain--he passed away in 2015. 6 months after his death, in what felt like a movie, I flew to England to meet his friends and family. This song is about that night I spent with his mom and best friend drinking champagne and dancing until the sun came up--reminiscing on a love that almost and will always be.”
The electronic background of the song, combined with Allie’s elegant vocals give the song a dreamlike edge - perhaps why they refer to their sound as dream pop. The song evokes the “could be/ would be” feeling of Allie and Cain’s relationships in it’s use of the LA singer’s higher register and the way the musical line under her vocals comes in and out.
An emotional song, “Cain” is a strong follow up to a successful EP that will hopefully keep EXES on the rise.
