KENNEDY RD: TORONTO'S JHENE AIKO

December 6, 2017

The Come Up Show put me on to This artist. Kennedy Rd. sounds just like Jhene Aiko, with even more entrancing production. And maybe even a more angelic vocal tone if thats possible. The name is surely an ode to the Toronto street which spans thorugh Scarborough.

"All I See" is so beautifully minimal with future and classic r&b tones. Her heavy vocal reverb stream creates an undeniable ambience that fills the silence gaps to be filled with a strong portamento bass tone giving us that synth magic our ears crave. Representing the hometown on her hat and under blue mellow lights, she walks around dark tunnels expressing how "All I see is you, Babe"

"Make It Last" starts with that same gritty bass tone we love, so it makes sense that both tracks are produced by Nova Gholar. This track has similar vibes with more trappy drum presence and that same beautiful ambience and soothing sounds. We see her cruising through paradise (in a Janet Jackson shirt, ayye) with a significant other who may just be who she sings about in the previous joint.

The most recent release from Kennedy Rd features fellow Toronto native, 11:11 (who is no stranger to our blog)

This more upbeat banger "You Know I Know" has nice back and forth between the vocalists. Is more up-tempo with the similar smooth synth chords, with a bouncier bass-tone almost comparable to a DJ Mustard production (again by Nova Gholar)

Be sure to check out Kennedy's other tracks on her Soundcloud, we're excited for her come-up.

Yes, it might be late on in the year but Violet LaVelle’s “Summer Love”, from September’s “Afraid To Say I Love You” is a bright, poppy bop about the complexity of confusing the love of summer with a summer love. From the unwound cassette cover art with hand-made mixta...
