KAILEE MORGE BREAKS OUT WITH "HEADCASE" FEAT. HAYLEY KIYOKO

April 30, 2019

After what seems like minutes, hours later, after listening to every track, I have come to conclude that Magick is very much real and embodied in the very essence that is Kailee Morgue.

She experienced an extremely transformative year both personally and professionally by learning what it really means to love and accept oneself. She embraced her mental health diagnosis, came out, and came in to a new understanding of what it means to be alive. At twenty years young she’s an old soul and a force to be reckoned with. All of these experiences helped her music career blossom. She uses music as a cathartic release of what ails her and as a means to connect with the world.

Kailee wanted to create music that heavily sounds like the music she listens to. “The songstress turned to inspirations ranging from Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chilli Peppers to Prince and Blondie, incorporating eighties-esque drums, live guitar, and rich instrumentation.” She was able to hone her sound and identity as an artist by collaborating with CJ Baran (Panic! at the Disco, Carly Rae Jepsen, Melanie Martinez).

Her newest track ‘Headcase’ was written and recorded in a mere “five-hour fit of inspiration alongside Baran”. Loving ‘Where Is My Mind?’ by The Pixies, she took it’s energy and ran with it to embody the struggle she has in relationships caused by her Bi Polar disorder. The natural push and pull that comes from said disorder is flawlessly executed through her chantable chorus. Dueting with Hayley, she bravely declares, "I’m a head case, but you love me, I’m a mistake, I warned you.”

Now wait a second. What year is it again? 2019?

More like #20GAYTEEN.

“Coined by Kiyoko and her fans, #20GAYTEEN turned out to be a year full of firsts for the rising pop star who continues to break down barriers at every turn.” Her debut album ‘Expectations’ is making huge waves and has placed her centre stage of “an apologetically queer pop movement.” Hayley Kiyoko is an extremely multi-talented singer, songwriter, director, actress, and dancer. “Nominated for two VMA’s (Best New Artist and Push Artist Of The Year), she attended her first awards show and performed her newest hit ‘Curious’ and took home The Moon Person Award for Push Artist Of The Year”.  With a mesmerizing live performance Hayley sold out every date of her headlining tour. She then went to join Panic! At The Disco on their ‘Pray for the Wicked Tour,’ performing in arenas across North America. “She was named No. 4 on NPR’s list ‘The 21st Century’s Most Influential Women Musicians, right behind Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna”.

“When writing Headcase, Kailee said she wanted a strong female artist like Hayley on the track to not only represent the LGBTQ community, but to help translate the idea of owning your issues”. As a fan of Kailee’s music, Hayley was really excited when she heard the track as she related and connected immediately. She claims, “it just felt like a perfect song for us to collaborate on.”

The track was “exclusively premiered with an interview between Kailee and Hayley on PAPER, who praises the track saying, ‘Headcase’ boomerangs from gentle, moody synths on the verses, to a glitchy, explosive chorus full of emotions-tinged melodrama.”
